Why Off-Season Photos Look Different (Better)
Summer Rome gives you harsh light from 9 to 5 and crowds everywhere. Winter Rome gives you golden-hour light at 10 AM, the Trevi Fountain almost to yourself, and atmosphere — wet cobblestones reflect the city like a mirror. Your outfit just has to meet the moment.
The Coat IS the Outfit
The single most important cold-season rule: your coat will be in 80% of the frames, so choose it like you’d choose the dress.
- Long over short — a knee-or-longer coat adds elegant vertical lines and moves when you walk
- Tailored over puffy — puffer jackets photograph like sleeping bags; wool photographs like cinema
- Worn open over your outfit adds motion and lets the inner layer show
- Camel, charcoal, deep green, and burgundy all sing against Roman stone
Colors for the Season
- Grey winter sky — Best colors: Emerald, burgundy, mustard, camel; Avoid: Pale grey, washed pastels
- Wet cobblestones (after rain) — Best colors: Deep red, navy — they reflect; Avoid: Black head-to-toe (disappears)
- Christmas lights (Dec) — Best colors: Cream, camel + one red accent; Avoid: Competing bright colors
- Bare plane trees (Jan–Feb) — Best colors: Rust, olive, warm browns; Avoid: Neon anything
Layering That Photographs Well
- Base: a fitted knit or silk blouse — texture reads beautifully in close-ups
- Statement layer: the coat, or a long cardigan/blazer
- Accent: ONE of — scarf, beret, leather gloves, statement earrings
- Legs: tailored trousers, or a midi dress with opaque tights and boots
Chunky knits are trending for a reason: texture adds depth that flat cotton can’t. But keep the silhouette defined — one oversized piece per outfit, not three.
Practical Cold-Weather Tips
- Hand warmers in coat pockets — cold hands show in photos (stiff shoulders, clenched fingers)
- Boots with grip — wet sampietrini are ice-adjacent
- Lip balm + tissue — wind-chapped lips and watery eyes are the actual winter enemies
- The umbrella trick: if it drizzles, a plain dark or transparent umbrella becomes a prop, not a problem
FAQ
Is it too cold for a dress in winter?
No — with opaque tights, boots, and the coat between frames, a midi dress works even in January. We shoot in short bursts and you warm up between locations.
What about rain?
Light rain is a gift: empty streets, reflections, moody skies. Heavy rain we reschedule — I keep flexible slots in the off-season.
Do the flying dresses work in winter?
Yes, over a base layer — and the wind that makes them fly is more reliable in winter. €85 rental, deep red or emerald.
Is winter cheaper?
My rates are the same year-round, but flights and hotels in Rome drop 40–60% November–February. The shoot is the same price; the trip isn’t.
